Daily Travel Description – 3 Day Sossusvlei Safari

Day 1

Windhoek РSossusvlei Lodge | Travel time about 5 hours Р380 km

We meet at your accommodation in Windhoek or at the airport early in the morning. Now our 3-day Sossusvlei safari begins and we are on our way to the picturesque Khomas Highlands. We pass the Eros mountains and the Gamsberg pass until we reach the small settlement of Solitaire. Here we stop for a short lunch break. After another 80 km through open Savannah Land, we reach our destination Sesriem and the nearby “Sossusvlei Lodge” in the afternoon. We refresh ourselves and now have the opportunity to go on a nature drive or relax on the ‘Sundowner Deck’ by the swimming pool. At 7 pm we enjoy a fantastic dinner on the “Al Fresco Terrace” overlooking the illuminated waterhole.

Overnight: Sossusvlei Lodge – dinner and breakfast included

Day 2

Sossusvlei Lodge

We have to get up very early to enjoy our breakfast (alternatively, we can take our breakfast packages with us) before embarking on our very interesting morning trip to Deadvlei and Sossusvlei Pan. We drive 61 km past Dune 1 and the famous dune 45 until we reach the 2 x 4 parking lot. From here we drive 5 km to the Sossusvlei car park. Sossusvlei is where we will find the iconic red sand dunes of the Namib. The clear blue sky contrasts with the huge red sand dunes, which is one of the natural wonders of Africa and a paradise for photographers. After visiting the Sossusvlei Pan, we drive back to the Deadvlei car park, from where we take a 1.1 km hike to reach the Deadvlei pan. If you are in good shape, you can also take this walk over the “Big Daddy” dune. We spend the morning around Sossusvlei and Deadvlei and on the way back we visit the famous dune 45. This dune is known for its elegant shape, which, along with its location near the road, has won the award for the most photographed dune in the world, If you have done without the strenuous hike to climb the “Big Daddy”, Dune 45 is an easier alternative because it is only 85 meters high with a gentler rise. Now it’s time to escape the heat and return to Sesriem for lunch and a good rest. In the afternoon we take a short trip to the Sesriem Canyon. The Sesriem Canyon is the second most important tourist attraction in the area after Sossusvlei. It is a natural gorge carved into the local sedimentary rock by the Tsauchab rivier, about a kilometer long and up to 30 meters deep. The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means “six belts”. This name was given by the settlers on the Dorsland Trek, who were on their way to the north of the country. Six belts (consisting of oryx skins) had to be tied together to bring water up from the canyon’s bottom with buckets. The Sesriem Canyon is only two meters wide in some places and sometimes has permanent water points, which many animals use. When we return to the lodge, we will enjoy a ‘sundowner’ on the lodge terrace before going to dinner and then retire for the night.
